Presentation of the Latest Work by Mohamed al-Asfar

From May 27, 2013 until June 03, 2013

On Monday, June 3 in Madrid, Casa Árabe is presenting the book Farha by Libyan author Mohamed al-Asfar. The event, which will be taking place at 7:00 p.m. in the Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62), will include speeches by Eduardo López Busquets, the General Director of Casa Árabe; Mohamed al-Asfar, the author of the work; Abdul Hadi Sadoun, an Iraqi writer, Hispanist and publisher, and Luis Rafael Hernández, writer and director of the Verbum publishing house.

Farha (published in Spanish as La increíble historia de la imposible caza y captura de la alegría by Verbum- Alfalfa, in its Letras árabes collection, 2013) is a parody novel with contemporary depth, in which humor is used as an antidote for tragedy. It is inspired by the events in the “Arab Spring” and the author’s own experiences, linked to the Libyan rebels who brought down dictator Muammar el Gaddafi. This story about searching and grasping for happiness is a symbol of the attempts by the powerful to dominate people, and just how impossible it is to stop people’s aspirations to conquer a better future.

Mohamed al-Asfar (Benghazi, Libya, 1960).

A novelist and writer, who has also been an Arabic professor and soccer player, he is currently a collaborating writer for several magazines and newspapers in the Arab cultural press. His earliest books were two books of poems published in 1999. He soon published several volumes of different genres and more than ten fictional books, which included the following novels: Rosetta Stone and Flower Stone, Guided by a Star, The World’s Navel, The Honey of People, Salt and The Mystery of Dreams. He recently published a volume on the political events during the “Arab Spring” in his country, Libya, with the title: Libyan Revolutionaries: Testimonials and Other Writings.
