On Thursday, July 2, the conference series “Amazigh Spaces” will be coming to an end with this presentation by Helena de Felipe (UAH) and Miguel Ángel Manzano (IEMYRhd-USAL). Join us for our final session and discover this resource providing access to all available information on the Maghreb region from the seventh to sixteenth centuries.

The Coordinated Research Project “Transits and Transformations in Maghreb Space and Population” (MAGNA II) studies the geography and history of North Africa, from times prior to the Arab-Islamic conquest—which began in the seventh century—to the sixteenth century, focusing on two key areas: space and population. It further consists of two projects, TRAMAGHIS (PID2021-122872NB-C21, IEMYRhd—USAL) and DIANA (PID2021-122872NB-C22, UAH), the members of which have addressed many different aspects involving these two core elements (toponymy, historiographical representations, environmental and climate issues, water management, the mobility of various human groups, the presence of women, networks of scholars, legends and folk traditions, etc.) through their publications. However, the MAGNA project has another objective resulting from the analysis conducted on the sources and contemporary specialized studies: the organization of all the data collected into a dedicated web portal, to be made available to specialists and anyone else interested. This web portal is currently being developed, compiling information on the aforementioned topics: toponyms and ethnonyms. Through a flexible, expandable structure, the data is presented in very clear entries that allow direct access to further details and their potential relationships with each other, while also providing a representation in the form of infographics which is easy to consult. The portal includes the bibliographic references used and establishes links to other existing portals and databases. A demonstration of its use and features will be provided during the presentation.

This scientific outreach activity resulted from the coordinated research project MAGNA II: “Transits and transformations in the Maghreb space and population” (TRAMAGHIS. PID2021-122872NB-C21 and DIANA. PID2021-122872NB-C22), financed by MICIN/AEI/13039/501100011033 and the ERDF. A Way to Make Europe.
