Casa Árabe will be taking part in PROJECTOR: A video art platform by hosting a series of works by various artists from Egypt and Morocco, all selected by guest curators. In Madrid as of September 8.
Projector is a platform created to increase exposure of moving images, placing an emphasis on their most experimental, contemporary and socially committed aspects.
The first series of works, curated by Roisin Tapponi of the Habibi Collective, will be presented at Casa Árabe’s Hall of Columns until October 10 and includes two works by artist Bouchra Khalili. The second set of works, curated by Ahmed Refaat of the Contemporary Image Collective (Cairo), will be presented at our Auditorium during a screening session on Friday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. (sign up in advance using this form).

Two works by artist Bouchra Khalili (1975, Casablanca), in which she uses archival footage to re-imagine visual narratives related with political uprisings.

Bouchra Khalili maps the political landscape of Algiers from 1962 to 1972, the period in which the city became the “capital of the revolutionaries” after Algeria’s independence from French colonialism in 1962.

The latest film to be made by the artist, on a commission from the Wexner Centre for the Arts, in which Khalili meditates on the sanitation workers’ strike in Paris from March to May 2020 and does so by drawing inspiration from the social and political upheaval in Paris in 1968.

“To Preserve a Revolution” is the title of this session, featuring works by five Egyptian film makers and artists who turn their gaze towards an event and the impossible ways of representing it. They deal with the experience of living an event as an active participant, distant witness or compiler. The videos reflect upon the way memories are stored and how they can be remembered through moving images.
