The eminent Andalusian scientist and inventor Ibn Firnas was the first person who ever managed to fly. Discover how in this puppet show for children. It will be taking place on June 24 in Cordoba. Tickets now on sale.

The fame of Ibn Firnas’ feats has come to be known by the Emir of Cordoba, Abd al-Rahman II, who decides to send an emissary, the famous Mu’min ibn Said, to verify first-hand that the wonders and advancements that he has heard about are true. When a very envious Mu’min arrives at the home of Ibn Firnas, he decides to propose an impossible challenge, something that Ibn Firnas will be unable to achieve despite all his wisdom, thus ruining his prestige: he dares him to fly like the birds.

Ibn Firnas accepts the challenge at first, but he soon realizes the enormous difficulties he will face, while constantly ridiculed by Mu’min.  After years of study and hard work, Ibn Firnas manages to build his first pair of wings and, under his worried wife’s gaze, he announces his intention to catapult himself from one of the Arruzafa towers and go down in posterity as the first man in history to lift his feet off the ground and fly like the birds.

The show is being put on as part of the centennial celebration of the Cordoba Festival of Courtyards.
