Qatar and Oman, an Imperfect Future?

From September 17, 2013 until September 27, 2013

On Tuesday, October 1, journalist Tana Uruñuela will speaking about the reality of two countries which are unfamiliar to most Spaniards, countries which are going on with their everyday lives at a time filled with uncertainty about the region.

The event, which will be taking place in the Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62) at 7:00 p.m., will be presented by the institution’s General Director, Eduardo López Busquets. Free entry to the conference until the room’s capacity is full.

There is a great lack of knowledge in Spain about the reality of both these countries. Most of the time, and even more so in the case of Oman, people are unable to locate them on a map. The goal of this conference is, on the one hand, to give us a closer look at what is happening today in the country with the highest GDP per capita in the world, Qatar, which at the present time combines tradition and the cutting-edge, and where Emir Hamad Al-Thani recently abdicated. And, on the other had, the unknown Oman, whose lands and seas have witnessed the passage of many different cultures, all in within a setting whose background is formed by a branch of Islam, known as Ibadism, set apart from the Sunni and Shiite branches. What are its inhabitants, governments, growth models, religion and, definitively, everyday life like at a time filled with uncertainty for the region? Nor can we forget to mention the repercussions of everything taking place in Egypt and Syria. Complicated times for two very different countries within the Arab world.
