Round Table Discussion: "The Arab Decade of Disability: Achievements and Prospects"

The Foundation for the Social Promotion of Culture (FPSC), with the cooperation of Casa Árabe and the AECID, is holding the round table discussion The Arab Decade of Disability: Achievement and Prospects. The event will be officially opened by the General Director of Casa Árabe, Eduardo López Busquets, and by the President of the FPSC, Jumana Trad. Also taking part are representatives from four local organizations that work on disability-related topics in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt. They are presenting the achievements made and the new prospects opening up as the "Arab Decade for People with Disabilities (2004-2013)" draws to a close.
With figures calculating that the disabled amount to as much as 15% of the population, for various reasons this region is amongst those with the highest percentage of its population affected by some sort of disability. In the particular case of Syria, the recent conflict and events are making the situation even more dire for this part of the population. The discussion and conclusion of this round table are an attempt to contribute new elements for a better understanding by Spanish public opinion about the huge difficulties that hundreds of thousands of disabled people face in this part of the world.
This event forms part of the FPSC’s sensitivity program to increase awareness about its activities to help further the integration of the disabled in the Middle East, which is made up of three main areas: accessibility to physical spaces, access to employment and accessibility in virtual services.
The round table discussion is being held completely in English.
This event is taking place on Monday, November 25 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Salón de Embajadores at our headquarters in Madrid (address: Calle Alcalá, 62). Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.
