On Thursday, February 3, Casa Árabe is hosting this round table discussion and presentation of the “Handbook for Intervention” created by the Save a Girl Save a Generation organization, which was designed as part of the CHAIN project. You can watch it live on YouTube.

To mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, commemorated every year on February 6, the organization Save a Girl Save a Generation, with the cooperation of Casa África and Casa Árabe, will be presenting its “Handbook for intervention in cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage (FM),” which was designed as part of the framework of the EU-funded CHAIN project.

The handbook’s purpose is to serve as a tool for assisting professionals who deal cases of female genital mutilation and forced marriages in their work. Taking part in the presentation will be Asha Ismail, president of Save a Girl Save a Generation; María Gascón, a mediator and training manager, and Ángela Hidalgo-Barquero, project manager of the CHAIN project, with moderation by journalist María Llapart.

The presentation will be followed by a round table titled “Broadening Viewpoints,” with the participation of Aïcha Camara, director of the short film “MYA (Mutilation and Ablation),” Ibrahim Bah, an activist and star of the short film “Mariamma,” and Asha Ismail.

The event will be broadcast live on Casa Árabe’s YouTube channel and on Save a Girl Save a Generation’s channels on Twitter and Facebook.

In conjunction with other NGOs like Action Aid (Italy); Equipop (France); the European Network Against FGM (Belgium) and Terre des Femmes (Germany), Save a Girl Save a Generation forms part of the two-year CHAIN project co-financed by the European Union, which is intended to promote multidisciplinary cooperation to fight against and prevent female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced and early marriages (FGMEF).

Save a Girl Save a Generation is a non-governmental organization founded by African women in 2007, with the mission of contributing to the end of harmful traditions and other forms of violence against women and girls by acting as a catalyst for positive change. It works to provide a database with knowledge, best practices, models and support networks to help anti-female genital mutilation activists and organizations working with communities to bring about this change.

Aïcha Camara is a screenwriter, film director and actress. Raising awareness is what she has set out to do with “MYA (Mutilation and Ablation),” a 13-minute short film she wrote and directed, which is currently on the festival circuit.

Ibrahim Bah plays the main role in the short film “Mariamma,” in which he tells about the difficulties he faced to save his daughter from female genital mutilation. He is an activist and the author of “Three Days in the Sand” (published by La Imprenta, 2021).

Asha Ismail is a Kenyan human rights activist of Somali origin who founded Save a Girl Save a Generation in 2007. Throughout these 15 years, that organization has worked towards the goal of ending female genital mutilation, the dowry system, forced marriage and other abuses against women in Africa. In Spain, she currently coordinates the educational program and gives awareness-raising talks to certain professionals (police, health care workers, etc.), which she combines with the Safe in Nairobi project, a place that provides shelter and assistance to women and girls at risk in Kenya.
