Casa Árabe is presenting this augmented reality app about the role played by women in al-Andalus, with the cooperation of Cordoba’s Municipal Institute of Tourism (IMTUR) (Cordoba City Council), on Monday, May 10. Held as part of the Nights of Ramadan.

The use and inclusion of information and computing technology in our knowledge-based society is becoming more and more widespread, playing an increasingly important role in highlighting and passing down our history, and the historical and cultural heritage that surrounds us.

In this case, we used augmented reality (a digital solution that works with the user’s own cell phone, making it possible to take a tour in an independent, safe and fun way) to explore one specific theme: “The empowerment of women in Moorish Cordoba” and the “Women of Al-Andalus,” to get a closer look at a series of key female figures in the history of Cordoba (more specifically, from the ninth century to the fifteenth century), and their social, cultural, political and economic contributions during the era of Al-Andalus.

The goal was to highlight the important role played by women in different sectors of Cordoba’s society, talking about their life stories along with the inestimable legacy they left behind: “their steps towards equality.”

To do so, we have transformed Cordoba’s Jewish Quarter into an augmented reality space telling the stories of five women (and several guilds) from Moorish Cordoba through seven tours that you will have to discover in real life. At each point, these women’s stories and work will be narrated by Muna, a digital avatar that guides you on the adventure.
