On Thursday, November 6, the fifth session of the series Aula Árabe Universitaria 7 will be held in Madrid, led by Hind Meddeb, a French-Tunisian journalist and filmmaker. The screening of this documentary will be held as part of the Cinema by Women Film Festival, which Casa Árabe is contributing to for yet another year.

Over the last decade, Sudan has undergone one of the most profound and painful political transformations in the Arab region. After the fall of Omar al-Bashir’s regime in 2019, the country experienced a brief period of democratic hope, which was interrupted by the outbreak of a new armed conflict, leading to a prolonged humanitarian crisis that continues to this day. Within a context of violence, repression and the displacement of millions of people, the Sudanese people continue to struggle to keep their collective memory and their right to a dignified future alive.

The documentary “Sudan, Remember Us” (Hind Meddeb, 2024, France, 76 minutes), directed by filmmaker Hind Meddeb, gives a voice to this memory through the stories of young Sudanese people who refuse to be silenced. The documentary portrays the 2019 revolution not only as a political event, but also as an expression of artistic, cultural and human resistance when faced with oblivion and violence. After the screening of the documentary, a debate will be held with the audience and students.

Organized with the cooperation of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) bachelor’s degree in Audiovisual Communication. Representing the bachelor’s degree program will be the speaker Alejandra Val Cubero, a professor of Audiovisual Communication from that university, who will also take part and introduce the speaker. Moderating the session will be Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s Culture and International Relations Coordinator.

After the film screening, we will be holding a debate with the director, live on our YouTube channel in Spanish and French. The documentary will not be broadcast.
