On Thursday, October 29, Casa Árabe is organizing the second session of Aula Árabe Universitaria 8, in collaboration with Carlos III University of Madrid, the Cine por Mujeres Film Festival, and La Casa Encendida, which will host the event. For the occasion, the film “In a Whisper” by Leyla Bouzid will be screened, followed by a discussion with actress Eya Bouteraa on identity and the power of silence.

The session, titled “A ‘Whispered’ Conversation on Identity and the Power of Silence,” will feature a discussion with actress Eya Bouteraa that will explore the silence imposed on issues of sexual identity in Tunisia and the challenges of bringing dissident experiences to light in conservative social and cultural contexts, as well as the role of cinema as a space for resistance and expression. The conversation will offer an opportunity to delve deeper into how Tunisian cinema—and specifically the work of filmmaker Leyla Bouzid—addresses political and cultural transformations, as well as the limits and possibilities of cinematic representation in presenting narratives on gender, sexuality, and migration. This will be a particularly enriching event for young students of Audiovisual Communication interested in cinema as a tool for representing invisible realities, challenging stereotypes, and opening spaces for intercultural dialogue.

In a Whisper (À voix basse), by Leyla Bouzid (Tunisia, 2026, 113 min.)
Returning to Tunisia for her uncle’s funeral, Lilia is reunited with a family that knows nothing about her life in Paris—especially her love life. Determined to unravel the mystery surrounding her uncle’s sudden death, Lilia confronts family secrets in a house where three generations of women live together amid silence and tradition.

This is the third feature film by Leyla Bouzid, internationally recognized for As I Open My Eyes—which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the BNL Audience Award and the Europa Cinemas Label Award—and later for A Tale of Love and Desire, selected for the 2021 Cannes Critics’ Week. In this new film, presented in the Berlinale’s Official Selection, Bouzid directs young actresses Eya Bouteraa and Marion Barbeau (nominated for a César Award for Best New Actress for En Corps), alongside acclaimed actress Hiam Abbass (Succession, Blade Runner 2049, Insidious: The Red Door).

As part of the “Aula Árabe Universitaria 8” series, Casa Árabe is organizing this session in collaboration with the Bachelor’s Program in Audiovisual Communication at Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M), the Bachelor's Degree in Modern Languages and Liteartures at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), La Casa Encendida, and the Cine por Mujeres Festival. There will be a special screening for students in the Aula Árabe program who have previously registered, followed by a discussion with the lead actress, Eya Bouteraa, and Alejandra Val Cubero, a professor of Journalism and Audiovisual Communication at UC3M, which can be watched live on our YouTube channel. Karim Hauser, Culture Coordinator at Casa Árabe, will host and moderate the event. The event will be presented and moderated by Karim Hauser, Cultural Coordinator at Casa Árabe. For the general public, the film screening will take place at 6:00 p.m., also followed by a discussion with the lead actress. Tickets are on sale on the La Casa Encendida website.
