To mark International Arabic Language Day on Thursday, December 18, Casa Árabe’s Madrid headquarters will be hosting the annual awards ceremony of the Spanish Society of Arabic Language Teachers (SEDLA), as well as acknowledging Prof. Salvador Peña as an honorary member. Come celebrate with us!

The Spanish Society of Arabic Language Teachers (SEDLA) has among its goals the promotion, research and teaching of Arabic as a foreign language (EALE). This is why it has created the “SEDLA Arabic Language Awards,” the second edition of which is being presented to mark International Arabic Language Day. It will award prizes to the best bachelor’s degree projects (TFGs) and Master’s degree projects (TFMs) on the Arabic language.

During the event, acknowledgment will be given to Prof. Salvador Peña as an honorary member of SEDLA, for a life devoted to the Arabic language. Taking part in the ceremony will be Cristina Juarranz, Casa Árabe’s Management Assistant and Programming Coordinator, Iñaki Gutierrez de Terán, the President of SEDLA, Said Kirhlani, member of SEDLA and secretary of the jury for the 2025 SEDLA AWARDS, Walid Saleh, honorary member of SEDLA, Salvador Peña (honorary member of SEDLA and professor at the UMA) and Adam and Micail Hajjaj, founders of the International Arabic School and collaborators with the SEDLA AWARDS.

As for the award-winners, there will be attendance by Ana Francisca Marco Estevan (1st TFM award) and Berta Fernández Zafón (1st TFG award).

You can watch the event live on YouTube

The jury members were:
- Victoria Aguilar Sebastián, Vice-President of SEDLA (University of Murcia)
- Said Kirhlani, a member of SEDLA (Universidad Rey Don Juan Carlos)
- Salvador Peña, an honorary member of SEDLA (University of Malaga)
- Roser Puig, a member of SEDLA (University of Barcelona)
- Ángeles Vicente, a member of SEDLA (University of Zaragoza)

In all, 11 works were submitted: 2 TDs, 2 TFMs, and 7 TFGs. One TD was excluded because it did not meet the requirements of the award call. The jury decided to focus on the treatment of the Arabic language and language teaching in the papers, and therefore did not question their validity and excellence, as they had already been assessed and judged by their respective examination boards. With these criteria in mind, no award was given in the TD category.
