The event is being held as part of the University Master’s degree program in Religious Pluralism: Jews, Greeks and Arabs from Late Antiquity to the Modern Age, a graduate program at the University of Cordoba focusing on the study of religious and cultural co-existence in the Mediterranean from ancient times to the Modern Era. The Master’s degree program offers interdisciplinary training that combines history, philosophy, literature and archeology in order to analyze the relationships and exchanges between the three great cultures of the Mediterranean: Jewish, Greek, and Arab.
The seminar, coordinated by the professor of Arab and Islamic Studies Juan Pedro Monferrer, a professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies, will bring together well-known specialists from various Spanish universities and research centers. They will be offering commentary on texts and guided readings with the objective of giving students and interested members of the public a closer look at the messages and contexts to found in some of the most essential works in the written tradition of the ancient Mediterranean.
About the sessions
Titled “One Text, One Message,” the sessions are intended for undergraduate and Master’s degree students, as well as any members of the public interested in the history of the religions, languages and literatures of the Middle East and Mediterranean Basin.
Far from being scholarly, overly technical lectures, the sessions seek to revive the ancient practice of textual commentary, offering an understandable, well-contextualized reading of each work, with special attention paid to the message it conveys within its own historical and cultural framework.
