This event is taking place on the occasion of the 1,100th anniversary of the birth of the second Umayyad caliph of Cordoba, a promoter of the arts and sciences.

Casa Árabe and the city government’s Department of Culture have organized this seminar to commemorate the figure of the second Umayyad caliph of Cordoba, on the occasion of the 1,100th anniversary of the birth of Al Hakam II (Cordoba, 915-976). After succeeding his father Abderrahman III, the founder of the Cordoba caliphate, on the throne in the year 961, Al Hakam II brought the prestige of the Umayyads’ court to its highest level and expression.

The caliph strove to uphold and increase peace at the borders of Al-Andalus, and the years of his reign represent the zenith of letters and sciences in Al-Andalus. Under his reign, the highest levels of development were achieved in arithmetic, geometry and medicine, and his love for the arts and sciences made him worthy of the name by which he was known, “the Wise Caliph.”
