From November 4 to 6, Casa Árabe is organizing this international conference in Córdoba, an academic gathering that will bring together national and international specialists to analyze the multiple dimensions of slavery in the Mediterranean and Iberian regions during the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period.

On November 4, 5, and 6, the Casa Árabe venue in Córdoba will host the international conference “Slavery in the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean from the 14th to the 17th Centuries,” a scholarly event that will bring together researchers from universities and research centers in Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and the United States.

The conference will address various aspects related to Mediterranean and Atlantic slavery between the 14th and 17th centuries, ranging from the ideological and legal foundations of slavery to the methods of capture, trade, and distribution of enslaved people, as well as their living conditions, processes of social integration, labor exploitation, and the dynamics of liberation and ransom.

Throughout the various working groups, participants will analyze issues related to the slave trade in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, the role of Iberian port cities, the enslavement of Muslim and Morisco populations on the Iberian Peninsula, and the social and economic networks built around captivity and servitude. The conference will pay special attention to the connections between the western Mediterranean, the Islamic world, and the Iberian territories.

Participants include specialists from institutions such as Université Lumière Lyon 2, Università di Torino, Università di Firenze, Université de Nantes, Michigan State University, the University of Seville, Universitat de València, Universitat de Barcelona, the University of Córdoba, and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), among others.
