On Friday, May 22, we will screen this documentary by Jordi Esteva at the Casa Árabe headquarters in Madrid, taking us deep into this remote and mysterious island in the Indian Ocean. We will learn about the oral traditions of its inhabitants and their deep connection to their natural environment. The screening is part of the program “Yemen: Journey to the Gates of Arabia.”

This documentary, based on a book of the same name, explores the mysterious island of Socotra, located in the Indian Ocean. Considered one of the most remote and unique islands in the world, Socotra preserves a unique biodiversity and ancestral traditions that remain almost intact.

Esteva ventures into the heart of this island to collect the oral stories of its inhabitants, who pass down legends, myths, and beliefs about genies, spirits, and supernatural forces that inhabit their landscape.

Through poetic imagery and a measured narrative, the documentary—filmed entirely in the Socotri language—reveals the deep bond between the Socotri people, their natural environment, and their spiritual worldview. “Socotra, the Island of the Jinn” is not only a magnificent ethnographic portrait but also a reflection on memory, identity, and the fragility of traditional cultures in the face of modernity and oblivion.

Jordi Esteva, a writer and photographer, is passionate about Eastern and African cultures, to which he has dedicated most of his photographic, cinematic, and literary work. He served as editor-in-chief and art director of Ajoblanco magazine from 1987 to 1993. As a writer, he is the author of The Oases of Egypt, Mud Fortresses in Southern Morocco, A Thousand and One Voices, Journey to the Land of Souls, The Arabs of the Sea, Socotra, the Island of the Jinn, Journey to a Forgotten World, and The Nomadic Impulse. He has directed the documentary films Return to the Land of Souls, Komian, Socotra, the Island of Genies, and, most recently, Stories of Cabo Corrientes: Ancestral Voices of the Colombian Pacific
