Spaniards in Tangier

Casa Árabe has organized a conference titled Spaniards in Tangiers in Madrid on March 5th and in Cordoba on March 6th, on the occasion of the presentation of Issue 5-6 of the journal Awraq.
The event will be presided over by university scholar Bernabé López García and will be held in Madrid at 7:00 p.m. in the Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62) and the following day in Cordoba at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of Casa Árabe’s headquarters there (at Calle Samuel de los Santos Gener, 9). Free entrance to both conferences until the room’s capacity is full.
On the occasion of the presentation of issue 5-6 of Awraq, our journal for analysis of and thought on the contemporary Arab and Islamic world, dedicated to the topic of “Spaniards in North Africa: Demographics and Protectorate,” Professor Bernabé López García will be presenting a work unpublished until now. His work reviews the role of Spaniards in the city of Tangier from the time it turned into a refuge for liberals (19th century) until it became a destination for economic emigration by its neighbors from the other shore of the Straits of Gibraltar. Thanks to research performed at the Archives of the Consulate General of Spain in Tangier, he will be analyzing the profiles of people in the Spanish colony from the 1880’s to the mid-twentieth century, as well as the demographic changes up to the present time.
An honorary full professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, he was a director and member of the Workshop for Mediterranean International Studies (TEIM) at that university. A specialist on Morocco and the contemporary history of the Arab world, he has authored works which include Las elecciones marroquíes desde 1960 a la actualidad (Moroccan Elections from 1960 to the Present, Rabat: Editorial Az-Zaman, 2009), Atlas de la inmigración marroquí en España (Atlas of Moroccan Immigration in Spain, Madrid: TEIM, 1996 y 2004) and El mundo arabo-islámico contemporáneo. Una historia política (The Contemporary Arab-Islamic World. A Political History, Madrid: Síntesis, 1997).
