Speeches on the professional area of the FCAT Cordoba

This year the Professional Area of the African Film Festival of Cordoba took place at the headquarters of Casa Árabe in the city. The institution took part in both round tables for professionals on that business sector.

FCAT Professional Area 2012 promoted cooperation between cinema professionals in Africa, Spain and the rest of the world. Round tables took place on Tuesday October 16th, with Eduardo López Busquets, director general of Casa Árabe, and Nuria Medina, coordinator of the Cultural Programs at Casa Árabe, and tackled key topics such as funding, production, distribution and exhibition of the African films.

Distribution in Africa’s cinemas
If funding could be considered as a hard battle for African cinemas, distribution is another tough one, and also setting audiences which enable to recover the Money invested. During this session the focus was on the initiatives which contributed to make viable African cinemas, and different angles were shown.

Participants: Russell Southwood, Balancing Act Africa: the Outlook of televisions, Information Technologies and Internet in Africa; Enrico Chiesa, director of the website View on Demand Africafilms.tv; Dayo Ogunyemi, founder of 234 Media, new models on hall exploitation; and Steven Markovitz, by Big World Cinema, South Africa, who showed the study case: Viva Riva.

Algeria, 50 Years of History and Cinema
FCAT Cordoba wanted to be part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the independence of Algeria with a special film season which was introduced in a round table and which highlights Algeria history through the eyes of some of its most famous filmmakers.

To introduce the round table there were Eduardo López Busquets, Director General of Casa Árabe; Marion Berger, FCAT Cordoba Programming Director; and Elvira Saint-Gerons, managing director of Three Cultures Foundation.
As participants of it, Alfonso Crespo, (moderator) cinema critic expert on cinema-history relations; Merzak Allouache, Algerian filmmaker with more than fifteen movies filmed; Samir Ardjoum, Algerian cinema critic and artistic director of the Journées Cinématographiques of Bérjaia; and Djamil Beloucif, director of the documentary Bir d'Eau.
