In all, 26 domestic and foreign experts will be meeting in Cordoba on the dates of March 4, 5 and 6 to explore the diverse ways in which the representatives of various monotheistic traditions perceived and described “otherness” through late ancient and medieval narratives.

Casa Árabe is hosting the international seminar “Stranger in a Land: Late Antique and Medieval Narratives on Foreigners and Exile,” in which we will analyze how monotheistic traditions perceived and described “otherness.”

This central category, understood not only as inherent to different religions, sectarian, converts, etc., will be studied from various perspectives, with a view towards discerning how wide-ranging traditions conceptualized “otherness”; whether they supported an elitist, inward-looking and exclusive attitude, or one perhaps more open towards foreigners or outsiders. Using different sources, we are able to research not only the exegetic treatment of specific biblical and Qur’anic passages, or broader narratives which refer to “foreigners,” but also the concept of “otherness” and how this is reflected in other literary genres such as Syriac and Arabic chronographies.

Promoted jointly by the University of Cordoba, the University of Stockholm and the University of Tel Aviv.
