On Wednesday, February 25, Casa Árabe will be holding the presentation of this book in Madrid at an event featuring the book’s author, Tina Suau, in a conversation with fellow writer Mohamed El Morabet. Come attend the event to discover this intriguing novel!
Tangier, 1972: a young Tangier native, Sara Jiménez, begins working at a small local export company, hoping to leave the city for good and return to Spain with her family. She soon discovers that her American boss, a resident of Tangier since 1939, is hiding a mysterious past. His marriage to a Spanish woman bullfighter from Spain’s Second Republic, Enriqueta Antares, and his criminal past lead the main character to get involved in shady business dealings.
To what extent will Sara, in her search for a life of dreams in Tangier, become complicit in the schemes of a mobster who, at the same time, opens doors for her to have unique experiences?
In this novel, which combines autobiography and fiction, Tangier becomes a main character, as well, witnessing major historical events of the twentieth century, when cultures merged, giving rise to unique encounters between peoples of different origins, in extraordinary both historical and vital adventures that few cities in the world have ever seen.
The presentation of this event will include participation by the author, Tina Suau, who will be holding a dialogue with writer Mohamed El Morabet, author of Un solar abandonado (An Abandoned Plot, 2018) and El invierno de los jilgueros (The Winter of the Goldfinches, 2022). The event will be introduced by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s Culture Coordinator.
Tina Suau (Francisca Suau Jiménez) was born at the end of the era when the city was known as International Tangier. She lived there until she was 18 and then moved to Valencia with her family in the 1970s, after Morocco gained independence. She is a philologist and professor at the University of Valencia, where she has had a lengthy career in management, teaching and research in applied linguistics and translation in English, French, Spanish and Catalan. She has been a visiting professor at the King Fahd Higher School of Translation in Tangier, as well as various universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United States.
