On Monday, November 7, we will be hosting this workshop to create conceptual maps in a digital format about the terms “shari’a,” “jihad” and “Moor” for secondary school, high school and university students. The event has been organized by Casa Árabe and the UAM as part of the activities forming Science Week 2022 held by the Autonomous Region of Madrid. Sign up here to participate.

Casa Árabe and the “Arab Ideologies and Cultural Expressions” research group at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid’s Department of Arab and Islamic Studies have organized this workshop to create interactive conceptual maps in a digital format about three Islamic concepts (shari’a, jihad and “Moor”) based on texts about the history of Islam on the Iberian Peninsula and the work carried out by the REISCONCEP (Representations of Islam in the glocal Mediterranean: conceptual cartography and history) research project.

Intended for secondary school students (14-16 years old), Baccalaureate students and university undergraduate and Master’s degree students, mixed working groups will be created for the workshop, with students of different grades and ages, with a view to facilitating learning and teamwork.

The goals are, on the one hand, to introduce basic notions about the history of Islam in Spain and, on the other hand, to highlight the importance of critical reflection about how to handle the sources of information upon which we base our knowledge.

The workshop’s duration will be two hours, and the training will consist of:

1.- Introduction and explanation of the mapping tool concept developed by the REISCONCEP research project (20 minutes).

2.- Practical workshop on group creation of three maps showing the concepts of jihad, “moro” and shari’a.

- Creation of working groups and creation of the maps (40 minutes): six mixed working groups will be put together with students from different educational levels (secondary / baccalaureate, degree and master). Each group will be responsible for creating a map on a concept from primary sources that will be provided (printed documents and websites). Each concept will be approached in this way by two different groups using different starting materials.

- Comparison of the maps on the same concept (30 minutes): The two groups working on the same concept will compare their maps, discussing the differences and seeking ways to produce a common map together.

3.- Sharing (30 minutes): The three resulting maps will be presented to all of the participants. The final results will later be posted with a summary of the activity on the IEXCUL website.

To create the maps, we recommend bringing a personal computer or tablet.

The workshops will be given by four professors from the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the UAM: Luz Gómez García, Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies; Laura Galián Hernández, PhD assistant, and Francisco Rodríguez Sierra, hired PhD.
