Casa Árabe is hosting this series of conferences intended for studying religious diversity and the dynamics of co-existence among communities on the medieval Iberian Peninsula. It will be taking place in Cordoba from March 6 to April 23. See the sessions scheduled below.

By analyzing the concept known as the “Exception of Al-Andalus,” this program will explore the historical, cultural and religious development of Al-Andalus from the eighth through fifteenth centuries.

The program will provide students with an understanding of Arabic literary production since classical antiquity, its influence on Arab culture and its later transmission to Al-Andalus through the Mediterranean basin and North Africa. These topics will be introduced after the proper context is provided about some of the most significant historical milestones to have occurred in Al-Andalus and the Middle East, in order to achieve an understanding of the processes of how ideas, texts and knowledge circulated in the medieval world. In addition, the seminar will include an introduction to the history and culture of the Jewish communities in Al-Andalus, through readings and analysis of literary and scholarly sources.

As the various sessions are completed, the situation of these religious communities in Al-Andalus and those which existed among them during the eighth and fifteenth centuries will become clearer, with the Iberian Peninsula as our central focus.

The sessions will be run by José Martínez Delgado (University of Granada), María Ángeles Gallego (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and Lourdes Bonhome Pulido (University of Cordoba). The event will be open to the general public.
