On Wednesday, May 26, Casa Árabe will be presenting the latest book by journalist Óscar Mijallo at its Madrid headquarters, at an event in which the author will be taking part. EVENT FULL.
At the presentation, Mijallo will be accompanied by another TVE journalist, Carlos Franganillo, and by Ángel F. Fermoselle, the editor of Kailas. The presentation will be introduced by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s International Relations Coordinator.
In the midst of the Battle of Mosul, Dr. Ayash risks his life to fight ISIS and try to save his patients. Having vanished after the Islamists’ retreat, a French-Spanish aid worker will do everything possible to find him.
In El médico de Mosul (The Doctor from Mosul), Óscar Mijallo uses his experience as a reporter covering the war against the Islamic State in Iraq to write about the abject poverty and greatness of some of the main role-players. The novel weaves together the stories of three Yazidi sisters turned into sex slaves, a fierce Islamic State fighter, a girl’s father willing to do anything to save his daughter, and little Osama, an autistic child who befriends Dr. Ayash. It is a harrowing story that brings to the forefront those unsung heroes who are often unjustly forgotten.
Óscar Mijallo (Arenas de San Pedro, Ávila, 1972) is TVE’s correspondent in the Near East, a region from which he has been reporting since 2003. He has been a special envoy covering the Battle of Mosul, and the wars and conflicts in Syria, Libya, Mali, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Lebanon, Gaza and the Second Intifada. He has also reported on the Arab Spring in different countries, including Egypt and the Western Sahara, as well as the recent terrorist attacks and coup d’état in Turkey. In Latin America, he has been a correspondent in Bogota, from which he has covered stories in Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, Panama and Chile. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a Master’s degree in International Relations and Communication.
