The exhibition "Limitless: Artistic (de-)construction of borders" reaches Ceuta

This exhibition, which includes works by sixteen Jordanian artists reflecting on real or imaginary borders, can be visited at the city museum as of April 15.

 
The project Limitless: Artistic (de-)construction of borders resulted from collaboration between Casa Árabe and the Jordan National Gallery, one of the most important art institutions in the Middle East.  

After its successful showing at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid and Cordoba, the institution has reached a collaboration agreement with the Premio Convivencia Foundation and the City of Ceuta Museums Service to bring the most cutting-edge contemporary Arab art to the public in Ceuta. 

In recent decades, contemporary art in the Arab world has undergone major development in line with social transformations, and this has been reflected in the attention paid to that art by the media and public, including both experts and amateurs. Art centers, galleries and museums in the Gulf, Middle East and Maghreb countries have become a springboard from which artists show their commitment to the world while helping to break taboos in their own societies, on the one hand, and stereotypes in our societies, on the other.
  
In the West, we continue to show an ambivalent attitude towards the Arab world, burdened with stereotypes while ignoring developments within the cultural realm that have taken place in their societies. All in all, this has led to ignorance and misinformation, which translate into the establishment of new borders, within the cultural realm, as well.
  
This exhibition is an attempt to contribute to removing such boundaries, stereotypes and fears created and assumed in the West about any “otherness” comprise of individuals who do not belong to any actual cultural or social reality. The purpose is to break down the borders that prevent us from learning more about others, even if we believe we already know about them.  

The exhibition “Limitless: Artistic (de-)construction of borders,” curated by Rocío Villalonga, an artist with a PhD in Fine Arts from the UMH, and Khalid Khreis, director of the Jordan National Gallery, brings together works by sixteen Jordanian artists, men and women whose works represent a critical reflection on issues revolving around the concept of real or imaginary borders created by human beings: social, political, natural, economic, gender-based, identity-based, racial, etc. in nature. 

Ceuta locals have first-hand knowledge, often without realizing it, of what these sixteen artists are proposing through this project. Ceuta, it is worth remembering, is surrounded by borders: physical and political borders to the south and to the north; internal borders which transform us and condition our relationship with others who at the same time form part of our own essence; borders that simultaneously separate us and unite us; borders that set limits which, amplified by the succession of events over this last year of pandemic, undoubtedly condition our lifestyle and identity. 

The exhibition features works by: Ala Younis, Ahmed El Khalidi, Ahmad Salameh, Asia Sheshani, Dana Kaoukji, Deema Shahin, Dina Haddadin, Firas Shehadeh, Juman Nimri, Khaldoun Hijazin, Linda Al Khoury, Mais el Azab, Mohammad Hawwari, Mo’men Khalid Malkawi, Raed Ibrahim and Reema Shatat. 

You can see the exhibition from Thursday, April 15 through Tuesday, June 8, at the Museum of Ceuta. Entry Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached. The exhibition will be held in accordance with all of the safety protocols required for Covid-19.
