The Geometry of Light in the Islamic World

On Tuesday, October 29th, Sabiha al Khemir, scientific director and curator of the exhibition Nur: Light in the Art and Science of the Islamic World, will be offering a conference at our headquarters in Madrid, at which she discusses the symbolism of light (Nur in Arabic) in the artistic contributions of the Muslim world.
On the occasion of the official opening of the international exhibition organized by the Focus-Abengoa Foundation, this expert on Islamic art will be giving the presentation The Geometry of Light. Introduction to the International Exhibition of Art from the Islamic World in Seville: Nur.
The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. (in English with a simultaneous translation into Spanish) at our auditorium. The participants will include Anabel Morillo León, the General Director of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation, and Eduardo López Busquets, the General Director of Casa Árabe. Free entry until the event’s capacity is reached.
Sabiha al Khemir, an expert on Islamic art, will be analyzing the heritage and cultural legacy of the world’s main Islamic civilizations, using light as a theme and a universal symbol in its artistic contributions. She will be showing the alliance between light, art and science, areas in Islam which preserve a common, unifying artistic language from Spain to China.
At its headquarters, the Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes in Seville, a historical building from the seventeenth century, the Focus-Abengoa Foundation will be hosting the exhibition Nur: Light in the Art and Science of the Islamic World, from October 26, 2013 to February 9, 2014. After that, the exhibition will travel to the Dallas Museum of Art in Texas, where it will remain on display from March 31 through June 29, 2014. This exhibition includes 150 objects originating from different public and private collections in Europe, the Middle East and the United States.
Sabiha Al Khemir is a writer, artist and expert on Islamic art. In 2012, she was named the main advisor on Islamic Art for the Dallas Museum of Art , where she provided her support to establish cooperative relationships with other art museums around the world for three years. Before being named to this position, Al Khemir was the project director and author of the catalogue for the exhibition Beauty and Belief: Crossing Bridges with the Arts of Islamic Culture, the largest traveling study on Islamic art ever brought together in the United States (2012). She was the director of the Islamic Art Museum in Doha, Qatar from 2006 to 2008, and head curator there from 2003 through 2006. Likewise, she curated an exhibition at the Louvre titled From Cordoba to Samarkand: Masterpieces from the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha (2006). Al Khemir has taught courses on Islamic art at the British Museum and has worked as a consultant in the same field for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
