Casa Árabe, with the cooperation of the Real Instituto Elcano and CIDOB, has organized this live round table discussion to be broadcast online on Wednesday, April 22. You can watch it on Casa Árabe’s YouTube channel.

The event will include the participation of Haizam Amirah Fernández, a senior researcher at the Real Instituto Elcano; Julia Choucair Vizoso, an associate senior researcher at the Real Instituto Elcano; Eduard Soler i Lecha, a senior researcher at the CIDOB, and Ibrahim Awad, a professor of International Relations at the American University of Cairo. The event will be moderated by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s International Relations Coordinator.

The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic which has spread throughout the world has not left the Arab countries unharmed. Though the impact of the virus has not reached its peak in the region, its health care systems and economies lack sufficient resources to deal with a potential expansion of the pandemic. Social peace under such adverse circumstances is at risk, especially in countries where anti-government demonstrations had taken place, like Iraq, Lebanon and Sudan, while in others like Syria, Yemen, Libya and Palestine, the outbreak of the pandemic has merely aggravated already dysfunctional infrastructures and shortages after years of conflict. At this online round table discussion, Casa Árabe is cooperating with the Real Instituto Elcano and CIDOB to perform a more in-depth analysis of this region.
