The New Arab Capital: Main Actors and Opportunities for Spanish Business

From March 14, 2013 until April 10, 2013

On April 10th 2013, Casa Árabe will present -in collaboration with Zawya and Marca España - the findings of "The New Arab Capital: Main Actors and Opportunities for Spanish Businesses". It’s the outcome of a study done by Jacinto Soler, financed and published by Casa Árabe, based on data from Zawya/Thomson Reuters.

This book analyzes the Arab capital’s main actors and funds, as well as recent investment strategies, with the case study of Spanish companies doing business in Arab countries, either in association with Arab partners or financed by them.

The event’s objective is to show how in the current context of North African transitions and liquidity in the Gulf economies, Arab capital can find invaluable partnerships in Spanish businesses. These companies have experience, advantageous specializations and international presence which turn them into strategic partners for project development in the region.

The event will take place at Casa Árabe’s Auditorium in Madrid (Alcalá St. No. 62) at 9:30 am. Free entry with prior registration by email  (economia@casaarabe.es) or telephone (+3491 5633066).

About The New Arab Capital

With the sustained rise in oil prices and the redefinition of investment strategies, Arab sovereign wealth funds and private equities have consolidated as potential and valued partners in project financing. These funds and equities have also become actors and key promoters of development projects in North Africa’s period of transition. In fact, the recovery of investment in Egypt in 2012 has been achieved thanks to Arab businesses and investments, coming mainly from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Kuwait. These countries are also investing actively in Tunisia, Algeria and Libya, besides Morocco and Jordan.

The success of the current transition processes requires tackling the pressing needs for social and economic development which led to the 2011 uprisings. All the countries of the region without exception have launched ambitious development plans in a wide array of activities, ranging from transport and energy infrastructures to urbanization, water management, social housing, industrial and touristic development, etc.

On the other hand, given the European and Spanish credit crunch and recession, Spanish companies have started positioning themselves in the North African and Gulf markets. They are indeed exploring new expansion strategies in conjunction with new capitalist partners.

Therefore, cooperation and growth can stem from the following converging elements: the oil surplus in the Gulf, the infrastructure and service deficit in North Africa and the experience and international competitiveness gained by Spanish business.

The presentation of "The New Arab Capital: Main Actors and Opportunities for Spanish Businesses" can be the right occasion to analyze the elements of the Arab-Spanish-Arab trinomial dynamics and promote Spanish business experiences in the region.
