The European project Green Heritage – Nurturing a Sustainable Future in the Gardens of Time (ID: 101174141), with which Casa Árabe has partnered, is launching its Green Heritage Community of Practice (CoP), an international network that was created to bring together professionals, researchers and institutions that work at the crossroads between cultural and natural heritage, environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
This community is seeking ways to foster the sharing of knowledge, interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue straddling research, praxis and public policy, promoting the role played by heritage as a tool for addressing environmental challenges and strengthening more sustainable communities.
As part of its efforts, on February 18 it held the first meeting of the Green Heritage Community of Practice's External Advisory Board, an online appointment organized by Casa Árabe which brought together international experts so that they could present the progress they have achieved on the project, as well as defining the strategic framework for this new initiative.
An international community for sustainable heritage
The Green Heritage Community of Practice is an open network which seeks to bring together professionals, researchers and cultural role-players concerned with the connections between heritage and sustainability.
The goal is to promote the sharing of knowledge, interdisciplinary collaboration and debate over the role of heritage in ecological transitioning process, through activities such as webinars, meetings by experts and international forums for dialogue.
First meeting of the Advisory Board
During the External Advisory Board meeting, the project's partners presented the main results from their first year of work and discussed how the Community of Practice works. The Advisory Board consists of specialists from different fields undertaking initiatives in heritage, architecture, sustainability and tourism.
These include Carmen González (University of Cordoba), Gaia Redaelli (University of Seville and PAX Association – Patios de la Axerquía), Joaquim Jorge (Cultural Strategy, Planning and Assessment Bureau – GEPAC, Portugal), Ana Castanheira (Instituto Marquês de Valle Flôr, Portugal), Bernarda Zupanek (Galleries of Ljubljana, Slovenia), Elena Bužan (University of Primorska, Slovenia), Paul Lane (Cambridge University, United Kingdom), Valeria Di Cola (with the project Muri per tutti, Rome), Petros Kosmas (Cyprus University of Technology), Dušan Kićović (State University of Novi Pazar, Serbia), Ataa Alsalloum (School of the Arts and ICOMOS UK) and Ljiljana Damjanović-Vasilić (University of Belgrade).
The External Advisory Board will be providing strategic guidance, expert advice and support to increase the project's international visibility, thus contributing to the development of the Community of Practice while seeking out new forms of collaboration.
First webinar on March 26, 2026
The Green Heritage Community of Practice will be launching its program of activities with a first international webinar, taking place on March 26 at 4:00 p.m. (CET).
The session, organized by the PAX Association – Patios de la Axerquía, will be given by architects Gaia Redaelli and Carlos Anaya with the title “Urban Heritage and Nature-Based Solutions: The PAX Strategy in Cordoba.”
The event will explore how urban heritage can contribute to environmental sustainability through nature-based solutions, using the experience of the Islamic-era courtyards of Cordoba as an example.
A network open to international experts
The Green Heritage Community of Practice is open to all professionals from around the world interested in the relationship between heritage and sustainability. The initiative especially invites experts from Arab League member countries, Europe and other regions to join this international network for sharing and cooperation.
