Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Cordoba is hosting a conference by Dr.
Othman Al-Rawaf on the various political events which have been taking
place in the Middle East in recent years.
The situation in the Middle East over the last few years has been characterized by instability resulting from the political crisis experienced since the beginning of the Arab Spring and the weakening of many regimes in the region. The prominent role played by Daesh, the crisis in Yemen and the upheaval in relations among the Arab countries themselves, whose internal conflicts have been spurred by different reactions to political developments, are factors which have determined the lay of the land in a highly conflictive region, where the most outstanding novelty lies in the growing intervention of Iran on every stage, creating an extraordinarily dangerous dynamic.
The importance of Iran’s intervention in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen, coupled with the relative distance kept by Egypt over the last few years, have led to an increasingly large role played in the Arab world by countries like Saudi Arabia, already quite relevant for some time now, as well as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The shifts in American policy in the region since the inauguration of Donald Trump have also driven changes of some magnitude, at a time when Russian intervention and the growing role of the European Union are signaling a change in trends.
To be analyzed at Dr. Al-Rawaf’s conference are both the events that have taken placed in recent years and the trends which those events are revealing in terms of the political and social dynamics to come in the Middle East in the near future.
Othman al-Rawaf has a PhD in Political Science from Duke University (USA) and is the Secretary General and Treasurer of the Al-Andalus and Dialogue of Civilizations Study Center (Rabat), a foundation created with the patronage of King Hassan II of Morocco and King Fahd of Saudi Arabia in the year 2001. Formerly he has been a member of the Consultative Assembly (Shura) in Saudi Arabia, an advisor to the Ministries of Education and Higher Education, and a writer for the English-language section of the daily newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat. He is also the author of various books and scientific articles in English and Arabic. He currently resides between Riyadh, London and Rabat.
