The Role of Women in Twenty-first Century Egypt

From September 17, 2013 until September 19, 2013

On Thursday, September 19, journalist and entrepreneur Nawal Moustafa will be offering this conference in Madrid, at which she will speak about the situation of Egyptian women at the present time.

Along with Moustafa, an Ashoka social entrepreneur and founder of the “Association for the Children of Imprisoned Women” in Egypt, taking part in the event will be Ana Sáenz de Miera, the Director of Ashoka Spain, and Karim Hauser, who is responsible for Casa Árabe’s Governability program. The conference will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Casa Árabe Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62), with free entry until the event’s capacity is full.

As a result of what we now call the Arab Spring, women’s participation in processes of change is a topic which has been debated from many different perspectives. Egypt, like Tunisia, is a country in which the role of women has been instrumental in terms of social mobilization. Given the current turmoil in the region, what is the outlook for Egyptian women’s challenges and prospects in the twenty-first century?

Nawal Moustafa

An investigative journalist, novelist and Ashoka social entrepreneur who founded the “Association for the Children of Imprisoned Women,” Nawal’s activities in Egypt’s prison system have the goal not only of improving conditions in women’s jails, but also that of rehabilitating female prisoners and their children during their stay in prison so as to increase awareness and reduce their stigma once they are released, while also opening the way for other organizations formed amongst local citizens. Nawal Moustafa has had books, articles, studies and stories dealing with controversial topics published. In 2007, she was awarded with the State Literature Prize. Moreover, she serves on the Boards and Committees of six organizations, including the Cultural Committee for Women’s National Conciliation and the International Journalists’ Network.

Ashoka

Ashoka supports the work of 3,000 social entrepreneurs in 71 countries. Spain currently provides support to 23 of them.
