The Sheltering Sky. Sculptures by Teresa Esteban
From December 20, 2013 until May 18, 2014
Exhibition open until May 18. MADRID
Casa Árabe is now organizing this exhibition, which will allow you to become familiar with the latest works by Madrid sculptor Teresa Esteban, in an exhibition curated by art theorist and critic Miguel Cereceda.
This important showing, which includes more than forty pieces of sculpture and drawings, is inspired by the constructive forms belonging to traditional Arab architecture. It is a truly fascinating display, whose initial subject matter appears to be domes, ceilings and minarets. Latticed windows, the interplay between light and shadows, the transparencies found in Arab architecture: they are all drawn upon in this exhibition through sculpture. Fascination for the plant-based geometry of the muqarnas can be seen, as well. The subject is the miracle of contemplation.
Teresa Esteban constructs her pieces in noble woods and alabaster, attentive only to a feeling that she wishes to convey to viewers: the pure emotion of contemplation. She recreates mosques, harems, military towers and granaries, highlighting the idea of shelter and protection. You will find sculpture-houses and house-sculptures, with rooms open to space and light, transparency and protection: the sheltering sky.
