Casa Árabe, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, CC.OO. and UGT are organizing this two-day seminar in Madrid.

The current scenario of social and political commotion on the southern shores of the Mediterranean and the major economic crises on its northern shores in recent years have especially affected youths as a group.

In 2015, youth unemployment worldwide was approaching 75 million, according to data from the ILO. The youth unemployment rate in Arab countries has reached 28%, and over 43% in the case of women, far above the global rate of 12%.  As for Spain, it continues to be the country with the most unemployed youths in Europe, at a rate of 49.6% according to data published in June 2015 by Eurostat. The rates are high on both sides of the Mediterranean and create major challenges for authorities. However, they also provide opportunities to cooperate and reflect together.

The objective of this seminar is to bring together organizations and institutions representing economic and social interests in the region to reflect upon the problems involved in employment and their possible solutions.

The meeting will combine the voices of academic experts with those representing labor union organizations in both Spain and the Mediterranean region, as well as Economic and Social Councils from the region, the International Arab Labor Union Confederation (ATUC-ITUC) and the International Labor Organization (ILO).

The activity will be taking place at the Casa Árabe Auditorium on November 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on November 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Presentations will be given in, French, Arabic and Spanish, with live interpreters.
