Toledo’s Qur'an

At its headquarters in Madrid, on September 20th, Casa Árabe hosts the launch of the 235 manuscript of the Library of Castilla-La Mancha in Toledo, edited and studied by Consuelo López-Morillas, of the University of Indiana.
The event takes place at 19.30 at Casa Árabe’s Auditorium (c/Alcalá, 62), and as well as the author of the study, Consuelo López-Morillas, there will be as well Maribel Fierro, professor of the Research at the Institute of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (Higher Council for Scientific Research) and Juan Carlos Villaverde Amieva, director of the Workshop on Arab-Romance Studies (SEAR by its Spanish acronym) of the University of Oviedo.
The lecture will deal with the origins and the history of this peculiar codex, the identity of its original translator and of the manuscript’s copyist, the links between this translation of the Qur'an and other contemporary versions, the nature of its language and the use of the tafsīr or Koranik exegesis of Muslim tradition.
The launch of this later Spanish Islam jewel is the perfect ending of the scientific meeting about the Aljamiado-Morisco literature The Hidden Voice (La voz oculta), organized by the "Julio Caro Baroja" University Institute of Historiography (IHJCB by its Spanish acronym) of the la Carlos III University of Madrid.
In the spring of 1606, most surely in the village Villafeliche, region of Aragon, a pious Morisco asked an «honourable people» their Qur'an to copy it. The original was a bilingual manuscript, in Arabic and with a translation into Aljamiado, which now is not known to us. But translating «merely from the Romance dél» into Latin letters, the copyist left us one of the most important monuments of the Spanish Islam: the sole complete copy of the Qur'an in Spanish language which has survived the Mudejar and the Morisco periods.
She is Professor Emerita of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of Indiana (USA). She holds a PhD. in Romance Philology by the University of California, Berkeley, and she is also an expert on Arabic and Aljamiado language. She has focused her studies on the transmission of the Qur’an and the Islam during the Mudejar and Morisco periods.
Her works published regarding this areas include The Qur’an in Sixteenth-Century Spain: Six Morisco Versions of Sūrat al-Nāzi‘āt (London, 1982); Textos aljamiados sobre la vida de Mahoma: El Profeta de los moriscos (Madrid, 1994); the chapter «Language» in The Literature of al-Andalus (Cambridge, 2000); and articles in magazines such as Al-Andalus, Al-Qanṭara, Nueva Revista de Filología Hispánica, Sharq al-Andalus, Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Hispanic Review, Journal of Islamic Studies, Journal of the American Oriental Society and Romance Philology.
