Minarets were fundamental features rising above the mosques of Al-Andalus, where the muezzin called Muslims to prayer. After the Christian conquest, many were repurposed as belfries for churches. Throughout this tour, we will learn about the characteristics of these important architectural landmarks which spatially and symbolically marked the urban landscape of Madinat Qurtuba firstly, and centuries later that of late medieval Cordoba. To do this, we will be giving a tour of the age-old Islamic medina (which later became the Christian city), seeing some testimonies that have reached our days to contextualize its importance in the medieval city. We will end the tour at the recently restored minaret tower of San Juan de los Caballeros, one of the oldest minarets in the Islamic West. You will have the opportunity to access the inside of this site at the end of the tour.
