On Wednesday, February 3, Casa Árabe and the Blume publishing firm will be presenting two new publications about Libya: No hay tierra sagrada para los vencidos (There Is No Holy Land for the Vanquished), by Javier Martín and The Libyan Crossroads, Pasaje mortal a Europa 2011-2020 (The Libyan Crossroads, Deadly Ticket to Europe: 2011-2020), by Ricardo García Vilanova. It will be taking place at 6:00 p.m. on our Youtube channel.
There Is No Holy Land for the Vanquished addresses the causes of and reasons for the migratory crisis that has produced upheaval in the Mediterranean and Sahel regions. It is the result of ten years of work in both regions by Salamanca reporter Javier Martín (winner of the Cirilo Rodríguez Award in 2019). The book skillfully mixes the essential ingredients that journalist Ramón Lobo assured every chronicle must contain: different voices of the protagonists on the ground, boots stained with miles of dust, and facts and objective data that spur reflection.
This work is complementary, containing images produced by the observant eye of his travel colleague, Ricardo García Vilanova, in The Libyan Crossroads (2011-2020), an extraordinary photojournalism essay that lets us delve into the lives of men, women and children trapped within the maelstrom of uprootedness.
The event will feature the participation of both authors and will be presented and moderated by Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe’s International Relations Coordinator. In addition, Beatriz M. Ballesteros, from Casa Árabe’s Balqís Bookstore, will give a brief speech.
Javier Martín is a representative of the Efe News Agency in Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. In his 22 years as a journalist in the Arab-Muslim world and North Africa, he has covered six wars and has been a permanent correspondent for Efe in Egypt, a special envoy to Iraq, the founder of the Efe correspondent’s office in Iran and a correspondent in Israel and Palestine. He has authored five well-known books about the region and received the Cirilo Rodríguez Award for foreign correspondents in 2019.
Ricardo García Vilanova is a Spanish video and photo reporter who lives in Barcelona. He has spent more than fifteen years working as a photojournalist who specializes in areas of conflict and humanitarian crises. His most recent work has covered the movements referred to as the “Arab Springs” (as of 2011) and the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza, Yemen, the Central African Republic, Nigeria, Chad, Haiti, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia and Bangladesh, as well as others. His work has been published in the most highly acclaimed newspapers and magazines and has been exhibited in several capitals around the world. He has earned awards in Europe and the United States and has been a contributor to CNN, Channel 4, Reuters, APTN, Euronews, Cuatro, Telecinco and TV3.
