Cervantes Institute (at Calle Alcalá, 49) Tuesday-Friday from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Closed Mondays. Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sundays and holidays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Cervantes Institute in Madrid is hosting an exhibition on the city

The exhibition, organized by the Autonomous City of Melilla and the Institute of Cultures, will be officially opened on Thursday, October 23, by the City’s President, Juan José Imbroda, who will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Juan Manuel García-Margallo, whose ministry is responsible for the Cervantes Institute, as well as other important State authorities.

“Universo Melilla" will be exhibited on the ground floor of the Cervantes Institute and will be divided into four spaces, each corresponding to one of the main features which define Melilla: the Mediterranean, Spain, Modernism and the border. Each aspect will be dealt with in a different way, using the most appropriate media, such as the work of painter Carlos Baeza, historical documents on the changes in urban planning up to today in Melilla, and audiovisual and documentary materials which tell the city’s history, in addition to other items.

The border and border fence also hold a place in this exhibition, represented by the testimony of people from Melilla who tell how they have lived the changes in the physical elements created for separation at the border lines, as a result of the immigration phenomenon.

A large part of the material which will be used in the exhibit has already been displayed in the city, with other materials created specifically for this exhibition. These will become a part of the Autonomous City’s heritage assets after the exhibition has ended.
