We have brought Arab cinema back to our headquarters in Cordoba, with a selection of films created by the new generation in this industry.
Egypt is proud to have what is undoubtedly the most important, oldest and most widely distributed film industry in the Arab world. This selection in particular offers a diverse portrait of the new generation within this industry, as old as it is innovative. They are serious films in terms of their production, and innovative in terms of their topics and the way in which they deal with them, all having been recently produced (from 2009 to 2013).
Two of the films proposed were directed by important, very well-known directors and production companies (One/Zero and Messages from the Sea), whereas the other two are works by young directors and emerging production companies that finance their films through innovative, flexible methods, so as to open up the way for new talents within the film industry in Egypt.
Due to a chance occurrence which delights us, three of the four films were directed by female directors, which reflects the innovation and significant change which characterizes the new wave of Egyptian cinema: the growing presence of women in the field of film direction, marking a difference with prior times in which women focused only on performing and, to a lesser degree, on writing.
The objective of these screenings, proposed by the National Film Center in Cairo and translated and subtitled by Casa Árabe, is to contribute to bringing Egypt closer to the hearts and minds of movie viewers in Cordoba.
