WAM (World Agriculture Museum) Art Project
From June 04, 2014 until June 12, 2014
Artist Asunción Molinos is presenting her project for the city of Cairo at Casa Árabe in Madrid on Thursday, June 12.
The event, organized by Casa Árabe, the Travesía Cuatro gallery and the Delfina Foundation, will be presented by Silvia Ortiz, director of the Travesía Cuatro gallery, and Nuria Medina, the coordinator of Cultural Programs at Casa Árabe. It will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the institution’s Auditorium (at Calle Alcalá, 62).
The WAM (World Agriculture Museum) Art Project was developed by Asunción Molinos during her stay in Egypt, a country where she has resided since 2010. Inspired by the eclectic Agriculture Museum in Cairo, Molinos created a museum installation that reproduced the atmosphere and visual language of the old museum, but she presented contemporary discourses involving the introduction of bio-technology into food production.
During the presentation, we will be discovering every stage within the creative process, from the research prior to the project, which included five months of work in the field studying agriculture in Egypt, to the final exhibition, seeing how the work was produced and mounted along the way, coinciding with the beginning of the revolution in Egypt.
Asunción will also be giving a brief introduction to the work she completed throughout her stay at the Delfina Foundation as part of the residency program “The Politics of Food,” the results of which will be exhibited at the Travesía Cuatro gallery in Madrid as part of the event PhotoEspaña 2014, beginning on June 10.
The presentation of this project is taking place as a complement to the exhibition “Hunger, a Manmade Object,” which is on display at the Travesía Cuatro gallery in Madrid. This is a work which leads us to reflect on the economics regulating the access to food, placing a special emphasis on the role of markets and current distribution systems. At the exhibition, you will find a series of objects, both handmade and mechanically produced, which provide the essential keys to understanding why nearly one billion people are deprived of constant and safe access to food.
