Casa Árabe is collaborating with the Fundación Promoción Social’s Center for Middle East Studies (CEMO) to organize this seminar, which will be taking place on Thursday, February 24 in Madrid.
The event, “Water as a fundamental human right and cross-cutting factor in cooperation within the context of COVID-19: the Jordan and Nile Rivers,” funded by the State Secretariat of Foreign and Global Affairs of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, is intended to analyze and more closely examine current issues involving water resource management and sanitation in the Middle East and the Nile Basin, as well as exploring the status of implementation of the Human Right to Water and Sanitation (HRWS), with a special emphasis on exploring possible patterns of conflict resolution.
This international seminar will consist of an opening session, an inaugural conference, two regular sessions, a general debate and, last of all, a closing speech. The opening conference will analyze the current status of HRWS implementation and its scope, along with the role played by civil society organizations. The first session will deal with water’s role as a basic human right and a cross-cutting factor in cooperation within the context of COVID-19 along the Jordan River, while the second will focus on the case of the Nile Valley.
The seminar’s attendees will include: Josefina Maestu, advisor to the Cabinet of the State Secretary of the Environment of Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge; Abdelrahman Al Tamimi, Managing Director of the Palestinian Hydrology Group - PHG (Palestine), Muttasim Al Hayari, Director of the Natural Resources Management Program of Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development - JOHUD (Jordan), Mariano Blanco, International Study Director at FCC Aqualia, Emilio Sánchez de Rojas, a member of the Climate Change and Security Expert Group of the United Nations Environment Program, and Zenebe Tsegaw, Head of the Programs Department at the Hararghe Catholic Secretariat (Ethiopia).
In order to comply with all safety measures and social distancing, if you are interested in attending the seminar, you must submit a request at the email address l.garcia@promocionsocial.org, after which you will be sent confirmation, if the event’s capacity has not yet been reached.
