Women’s Month at Casa Árabe

To mark the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, Casa Árabe will being a full series of activities related with women in the Arab world, to be held throughout the month. 

Among the activities we will be holding are the following: 
 
- Wednesday, February 24 at 6:00 p.m. Conference titled “Changing Laws and Breaking Barriers for Women’s Economic Empowerment in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia,” on the occasion of the presentation of the OECD report with the same name. With the participation of: Carlos Conde, Director of the Middle East and Africa Global Relations Division (OECD); Soukaina Bouraoui, Executive Director of the Centre of Arab Women for Training and Research (CAWTAR)   and Charlotte Goemans, a policy analyst for gender and development at the OECD. 
 
- Monday, March 8 at 8:00 p.m. Life of the Soul” concert, by Habiba Chaouf, Pilar Alonso and Ana Silva.
 
- Tuesday, March 9 at 6:00 p.m. Conference titled “Gender Politics in Tunisia and Libya.” Participating in the round table will be Begoña Lasagabaster, the representative of UN-Women for Tunisia and Libya; Yosra Fraoues, the president of the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women, and Libyan activist Wafia Saifalnasr, who has been very involved in her country’s political life in recent times.

- Thursday, March 11 at 6:00 p.m. Round table discussion on “Women in the visual arts in the Arab world.” With the participation of artists Zoulikha Bouabdellah and Amina Benbouchta, gallery owner Sabrina Amrani and Casa Árabe’s Culture Coordinator, Nuria Medina. 

- Friday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. Film: Screening of the documentary film “Freedom Fields”  by Naziha Arebi (Libya, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, United States, Lebanon, Qatar, Canada. 2018, 97 min.). 
In post-revolution Libya, a group of women has come together to achieve the dream they all share: playing soccer for their country. But the country sinks into civil war and the utopian hopes of the Arab Spring fade away. 
 
- Friday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. Film: Screening of the documentary “Queens of Syria” by Yasmin Fedda (United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, 2014, 70 min). 
Fifty women from Syria, all forced into exile in Jordan, meet during the fall of 2013 to create and produce their own version of “The Trojan Women,” a Greek tragedy by Euripides that deals with the difficult situation for women in times of war.
