Women in the Middle Ages

Casa Árabe has organized this conference in Cordoba on January 23, to be
given by Carmen Panadero, the author of the book for which the talk has
been named, and presented by José Esquinas, from the Universidad
Politécnica de Madrid.
At the event, Carmen Panadero will be providing us with a general overview about women in the Middle Ages during the era of Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula. To do so, she will focus on three large communities from that era, the Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities, which have held such great importance in our history and culture, through a comparative study on various aspects of their lives: family, social and cultural life, and religion. Likewise, she will talk to us about the pressure exerted upon them all by acculturation and assimilation processes during those times, as well as the interwoven relationships which arose among these three cultures.

Carmen Panadero is a primary school teacher (Basic General Education), painter and writer. As a painter, she began her work at the Gutiérrez-Navas Gallery in Madrid, and later her education continued at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid’s School of Fine Arts. Her paintings have appeared in 53 exhibitions, including solo and group displays, and she has received several awards. Her work is represented in the collection of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, at museums and in private collections in Spain, Germany, Portugal, the UnitedStates and the United Kingdom. Most notable among her works as an author are several historical novels: La cruz y la media luna (The Cross and the Crescent), El collar de Aljófar (Aljófar’s Necklace) and El Halcón de Bobastro (The Falcon of Bobastro). Added to this interest in history found in her books is a research essay titled The Andalusians Who Founded the Emirate of Crete and her most recent publication, about Women in the Middle Ages, as well as 51 other history articles and historical fiction tales. She has also contributed numerous articles and short stories to the literary and artistic journals Arte, Arqueología e Historia (published by the Provincial Government of Cordoba) and Fons Mellaria (published by the Town Council of Fuente Obejuna, Cordoba), as well as the online cultural magazine Las Nueve Musas (Oviedo).
