On Tuesday, May 19, in Madrid, Casa Árabe will host this roundtable discussion, during which three experts will offer a comprehensive and contextualized overview of the situation in Yemen from three perspectives: political, international, and humanitarian. The event is part of the program “Yemen: A Journey to the Gates of Arabia.”
The panel will feature Ignacio Gutiérrez de Terán, professor in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM); Maysaa Shuja Al-Deen, researcher at the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies; and Yousef Al Dubai, Yemeni writer and poet, author of the book *From Yemen to Spain*. Moderator: Leyla Hamad Zahonero, research associate at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CEARC).
This panel offers a broad and contextualized approach to Yemen from various perspectives, with the aim of providing a deeper understanding of the country’s reality.
A brief overview of its recent history will be provided to highlight some of the social and cultural characteristics that define Yemen’s unique identity and have decisively influenced its political evolution. This introductory framework will help contextualize the discussion and facilitate subsequent analysis, as well as provide a better understanding of the various elements shaping the current situation.
Likewise, the ongoing conflict will be addressed, with an emphasis on its contemporary dynamics and possible future scenarios. The panel will examine the key aspects of the war: the local actors involved, the role of regional and international powers, and its impact on the daily lives of the Yemeni population.
Three perspectives—political, international, and humanitarian—to shed light on a complex and, in many cases, overlooked reality, within the framework of a critical dialogue that invites reflection on Yemen.
