MADRID
In “Bazamat,” Nesma passionately explores the forgotten traces of a distant past which, nevertheless, forms a fundamental part of our essence. These traces manifest themselves in many ways: in a familiar smell, in an evocative song, a certain way of looking, speaking or moving, in a lost object that suddenly reappears... Something lies deep within the past, calling to us, something that whispers to us about an ancestral legacy living inside us all.

With 24 dancers on stage, hailing from four continents and members of the Nesma Al-Andalus Project—an international choreographic initiative—accompanied by five musicians from Syria and Spain, this visually and emotionally rich performance is brought to life. It is a performance which constantly draws our attention to the aforementioned traces: in the form of the footsteps of a living being traveling great distances, a living being that dances.

Through these performances, Nesma highlights the influence and scope of Al-Andalus Arab civilization on our history, customs and mindset—that missing link in our Iberian, Mediterranean and European culture...

The elegance and refinement of dance reflect the music and poetic beauty of Al-Andalus Arab culture, intimate and dreamlike. Even in moments of celebration and joy, the movements breathe with sweetness, a hallmark of Nesma’s choreographic language.
