Published at the initiative of professor and Arabist Carmen Ruiz Bravo-Villasante, in Issue 22 of the journal Cuaderno de Almenara (CantArabia-Círculo CantArabia) was the text of the master lecture given by Arabist Pedro Martínez Montávez, titled “The Dawn of Al-Andalus: From Ignacio Olagüe to Ahmad Amin and Husayn Mu’nis.” It is an accurate and necessary review focusing on Al-Andalus’s appearance on the historical stage, stressing the idea that Al-Andalus must be constantly meditated upon, reinterpreted and reformulated as a form of teaching.

The conference series “The Origin of Al-Andalus: Keys to a historiographical debate,” scientifically coordinated by Professor Alejandro García Sanjuan, was officially opened at Casa Árabe on October 9, 2018. Thematically focusing on the origin of Al-Andalus, it addressed the problems and controversies being produced by different deniers who disassociate the origin of Al-Andalus from the conquest in

the year 711; the origin of these ideas goes back to Ignacio Olagüe (d. 1974), and they have been strongly contested and refuted by academia, including many scholars and researchers.
