29th "Cirilo Rodríguez" Award for Foreign Correspondents

The Press Association of Segovia (APS) has announced the holding of the "Cirilo Rodríguez" Journalism Award for Spanish media’s correspondents and special envoys abroad, which is now reaching its 29th edition.

February 13, 2013
Dedicated to reporters who work outside of Spain, at the professional level the prize is considered to be one of the most prestigious in its field, due to the diverse nature of the jury and the list of excellent reporters who have earned it. It is organized in memory of Segovian journalist Cirilo Rodríguez, who was a correspondent for Spanish National Radio (RNE) in New York.

The jury is made up of the presidents of the Spanish Federation of Journalist Associations (FAPE), Elsa González, and the APS, Alfredo Matesanz, as well as Luis Antonio Hernández, the director of Radio Segovia, the broadcasting company where Rodríguez began his career. The members of the jury also include the winner of the last edition, on this occasion Enrique Ibáñez, coordinator of the editorial desk of the EFE Press Agency in Bogota, and journalists Felipe Sahagún, Ramón Lobo, Tomás Alcoverro, Gervasio Sánchez and Diego Carcedo. Also asked to form part of the jury are representatives of newspapers, magazines, agencies and television and radio stations with national broadcasting or coverage, with the Secretary of the APS acting as the jury’s secretary (with no vote), as well as the Communication Director of Bankia, Amalia Blanco.

The members of the jury will hold their first meeting at the City Hall of Segovia on the upcoming date of April 15th. There they will name three finalists until a second meeting on May 24th, when they will select the winner and carry out the award ceremony.

The award comes with a monetary prize of 6,000 euros for the winner, and 1,000 euros for each of the two finalists. Moreover, all three will receive an exclusive piece made by the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja, known as the “Lens of Earth,” and, as on prior occasions, the Prince and Princess of Asturias are expected to meet with the award winners at the Zarzuela Palace, along with the organizers, members of the jury and sponsors. The position of President of Honor is held by the Princess of Asturias.

On prior occasions, winners have included journalists Manuel Leguineche, Diego Carcedo, Felipe Sahagún, José Virgilio Colchero, Javier Martín Domínguez, Hermann Tertsch, Beatriz Iraburu, Juan Jesús Aznárez and the television team made up of Ángela Rodicio and José Luis Márquez.

Others who have won the award include Román Orozco, Ferrán Sales, Gervasio Sánchez, Pilar Bonet, Juan Fernández Elorriaga, Vicente Romero, cameraman Evaristo Canete, Fran Sevilla, Ramón Lobo, Juan Cierco, Tomás Alcoverro, Javier Espinosa and Enric González. The award is sponsored by the Municipal Government, the Provincial Government and Bankia, with the cooperation of the FAPE, Iberia, Centro del Vidrio and Paradores.
