MADRID
The purpose of the proposals that have been included involve establishing an alternative agenda to the current model, focusing more on defending human rights and fighting inequality and European extraction-oriented exploitation in the Mediterranean countries. To that end, throughout 2021 the International Secretariat of Podemos organized a series of webinars in the European Parliament, for thought and debate among a score of specialists from the European Parliament, representatives from the United Nations, scholars, journalists, activists, trade union representatives, NGOs and social movements from both sides of the Mediterranean.

The conclusions of these meetings have been compiled in this book, “A New Agenda for the Mediterranean,” to be presented by Idoia Barreñada, a member of the European Parliament and head of the International Secretariat of Podemos, at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid on Wednesday, March 16 at 6:00 p.m. The event will be officially opened by Ione Belarra, Spain’s Minister of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, and the Secretary General of Podemos. Participants will include Joumana Haddad, a Lebanese writer, journalist and activist; Helena Maleno, a journalist and migrants’ rights defender; Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio, a professor of Arab and Islamic Studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and Isaías Barreñada, a professor of International Relations at the UCM, as well.
