A student from Casa Árabe’s Language Center, runner-up in the Harf حرف Arabic debate and rhetoric contest

Marco A. Velasco, who is currently enrolled in the Arabic Press II course, came in second place behind the young French-Algerian-Iraqi woman Rim Salhi.

The first edition of this debate and rhetoric competition, organized by the King Salman of Saudi Arabia Academy (KSGAAL) with the cooperation of the Institut du Monde Arabe (IMA), was intended for level B2 Arabic language students and above. It was held as part of the events put on during “Arabic Language Month” in France. 

A chemical engineer who specializes in international cooperation and humanitarian aid, Marco A. Velasco has worked for the Ministry of the Environment in Spain, at the United Nations and at the NGO Doctors of the World. He currently works at FIIAPP, an international cooperation foundation linked to Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation. Throughout his career, he has lived in Spain, the Caribbean, the Philippines, Algeria, Palestine and Turkey. 

A student of Arabic at the University of Oviedo, he went on to the Jesús Maestro Official Language School in Madrid before ending up at Casa Árabe, where he has taken several courses in Modern Standard Arabic (AME V through VII) and Press Arabic. He has been a student of Djalila Chaib, Zohor Bouchenaki, Samir Tennoun and Said Kirhlani, four of the teachers at the Casa Árabe Language Center

The Casa Árabe Language Center has been teaching Modern Standard Arabic and dialects since 2008. Among its offerings are classes for children from 3 to 12 years old, as well as adults and youths from 13 years old. Classes are held in person at Casa Árabe’s headquarters in Madrid (at Calle Alcalá, 62) and online.
