DUBáI
Art Jameel Commissions is a yearly program linked to the future Jameel Arts Center, to be opening its doors in Dubai sometime in the year of 2018. The program is being carried out along a cycle lasting three years, with a focus on three different fields: sculpture (2018), research and conferences (2019), and drawing and painting (2020). The competitions are open to artists from the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, as well as all artists of other origins who are interested in or familiar with these regions. The program is related with Art Jameel’s interest in the production and display of public works.

The first program by Art Jameel Commissions for 2018 focuses on sculpture and emphasizes light as an artistic medium, and its role in a dynamic urban environment like Dubai. Those artists who would like to submit proposals must have some prior experience working in the public realm. Although the commission is meant for a work which uses light, those artists who have not worked with light as a medium in the past may also submit their projects. Though the work is one dealing with light, potentially more visible at night, it must also create a powerful visual impact during the daytime.

The jury for 2017-2018 includes writer and curator Shumon Basar; independent curator and art historian Reem Fadda; James Lingwood, co-director of Artangel; Elvira Dyangani Ose, a professor of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, President of the Sharjah Art Foundation, as well as Fady Jameel and Antonia Carver from Art Jameel.

The deadline for submitting projects is November 21, 2017.
