Casa Árabe is publishing this special edition of the Casa Árabe Economics and Business Bulletin on the occasion of its tenth anniversary of activity and the holding of the business day titled “Ten years of economic relations between Spain and the Arab countries: taking stock and looking to the future,” on Wednesday, July 5, 2017.

With contributions by experts and main role-players in Spanish-Arab economic relations, this special edition of the Bulletin takes a look back at the economic relations and cooperation that have existed between Spain and the Arab countries over this last decade, as well as the Spanish business projects in the region and the latest events in Arab economies, which have undergone times of economic booms and expansion, as well as economic recession and conflicts.

The Bulletin places a special emphasis on some of the important milestones and aspects that have played a role in these years of economic relations, such as the tenth anniversary of the construction of the Medgaz gas pipeline and its impact on relations in the field of natural gas between Spain and Algeria (with an article by Aurelia Mañé), the increase in economic relations between Spain and the Arab countries during these years (Ana Gonzalez), and the ten years of development in Islamic finance in Morocco (Gonzalo Rodríguez).

In the business section, a selection of projects developed by Spanish companies in the region is described, as well as the status of some of the most significant, such as the high-speed railway from Mecca to Medina, which will begin to run this year. There is also an interview with the president of Ineco, a company which forms part of the consortium carrying out the project, which also has an important presence in the Arab countries.

It also includes an analysis of Spain’s cooperation with the region over this time period of insecurity and conflicts (Javier Parrondo), the status of Euro-Mediterranean relations (Gonzalo Escribano) and the impact being held by new technologies on the Arab economies (Javier Albarracín), with comparative analyses of the strides these economies have made over the last ten years in terms of human development and ease in doing business.

The Casa Árabe Economics and Business Bulletin was a bi-monthly journal about economic current events published by Casa Árabe as of 2007 (as of 2008 in a bilingual format in Arabic and Spanish and since 2010 in a web format, as well), until 2013, when it ceased to be published due to the cutbacks which the institution underwent as a result of the economic crisis. This special edition has been published thanks to the support of the company Gas Natural.
