The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is cooperating with the Spanish International Development Cooperation Agency (AECID) within the framework of the Masar Program launched by the AECID in 2011 to support democratic governance in North Africa and the Middle East. At present, it is working on the promotion of gender equality through a series of specialized seminars, with the participation of legal experts, judges and members of parliament from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan and Mauritania.

On the dates of October 4 and 5 the very successful preparatory Global Seminar at Casa Árabe was oriented towards providing a regional overview of the status of women’s rights. The Seminar included participation by the Arab Women’s Legal Network (AWLN) and five Arab experts, who gave presentations on the advancements and challenges for Criminal Law involving violence against women, and on Family Law and Shari’a. It also included the participation of speakers who discussed the case of Spain: Matilde Fernández, former Minister of Social Affairs and currently a Senator, Ángeles Álvarez, a member of parliament and spokeswoman for the Equality Commission of Spain’s Congress of Deputies, and María Tardón Olmos and Carmen Delgado Echevarría, magistrates with the General Council of the Judicial Branch of Power (CGPJ).
