Organized by the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Spanish Embassy in Morocco, the international colloquium “Echoes of Al-Andalus: Current views” was held across six sessions that discussed different topics.

The inaugural session was led by the President of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco and Administrator of the Al-Andalus Chair, Abdelouahed Akmir, followed by a few words from Abdeljalil Lahjomri, Perpetual Secretary of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, and Enrique Ojeda Vila, the Ambassador of Spain in Morocco.

After this opening, the participants, who included Casa Árabe’s Deputy Director, Cristina Juarranz, had the opportunity to work on the subject of the colloquium across seven sessions revolving around three proposed broad areas: Portrayals of Al-Andalus in the collective imagination and memory; Manifestations of Al-Andalus in popular culture; and Andalusian architecture today, straddling tangible and intangible heritage.

In addition, a meeting was held by the scientific committee of the Al-Andalus Chair with the goal of organizing the future international colloquium on the subject “From Fortuny to Bertuchi: Images and heritages of Morocco and Al-Andalus at the beginning of modernity.” The purpose of this colloquium is to evaluate Morocco’s relevance in the work by these artists, as well as the impact their legacy has had in Morocco, within a global Mediterranean context.

The colloquium will be divided into three meetings to be held at the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Rabat (April 29 and 30, 2025), the Three Cultures Foundation in Seville, Spain (June 25 and 26, 2025) and the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tetouan, Morocco (October 29 and 30, 2025).
